The Titanic
was the first ship to offer relative comfort to passengers in 3rd
class; in this case, mostly emigrants headed for the New World.
Their accommodations were even superior to that of 1st class passengers
travelling on ships in the previous century.
Locked gates prevented access of 3rd class passengers to the reserved
facilities of other classes. This situation was one of the causes
for the great loss of life among these travellers (75%).
